Home Depot Pro Xtra: is it worth it for contractors?
Home Depot Pro Xtra is a free loyalty program for contractors: Perks, purchase tracking by job, volume pricing and paint savings. How to sign up and use it.
Yes. For almost every contractor who buys at Home Depot, Pro Xtra is worth it. It is Home Depot's free loyalty program for pros. It costs nothing to join, you earn Perks on what you already buy, and it keeps your receipts organized by job. The real value for a small contractor is not the rewards. It is knowing what each job cost you in materials.
What is Home Depot Pro Xtra?
Pro Xtra is the Home Depot pro account for contractors, remodelers, handymen, property managers and other trade businesses. You sign up once, then give your phone number or scan your Pro Xtra card at checkout, in the store or online. Every purchase is saved to your account.
People search for it under many names: Home Depot pro account, Home Depot business account, Pro Xtra loyalty program, Pro Xtra membership and Home Depot pro rewards. They are all the same free program. The Home Depot commercial credit card is a separate product. You do not need the card to use Pro Xtra.
The main Pro Xtra benefits
- Perks: you earn rewards as your yearly spending passes set levels. Higher spending moves you up a tier with better Perks.
- Purchase tracking: your receipts are saved online, so you can search and download them instead of keeping paper.
- Job names on receipts: you can tag a purchase with a job name or PO number, which makes job costing much easier.
- Volume pricing: you can ask for a better price on large orders, such as drywall or lumber for a full job.
- Paint savings: Pro Xtra members get a discount on paint, which adds up for painters and remodelers.
- Pro Desk help: the Pro Desk can hold orders, load trucks and help with bulk quotes.
Home Depot changes the exact Perks levels, discounts and rules from time to time. Check the current terms on the Home Depot website before you count on a number.
Home Depot pro account sign up
- Go to the Pro Xtra page on homedepot.com, or ask at the Pro Desk in any store.
- Enter your business name, trade, phone number and email.
- Add your team members if more than one person buys for the company.
- Use your phone number at every checkout so every purchase is saved.
Sign up takes a few minutes and is free. Add your crew leads to the account, so purchases they make in the field are tracked too.
Is Pro Xtra worth it for a small contractor?
For a one-person handyman business, the Perks are small at first. The receipt tracking alone is still worth it. At tax time you can download a year of purchases instead of searching a truck full of paper.
For a remodeler or small general contractor spending tens of thousands a year, the Perks and paint savings start to matter, and volume pricing on big orders can beat the shelf price. Ask for a volume quote any time an order is large.
The part most contractors miss: job costing
The biggest money leak in a small contracting business is not paying too much for materials. It is not knowing what a job really cost until it is over. If you tag every Home Depot purchase with the job name, you can see material costs per job, compare them to your estimate, and catch a job that is going over while it is still running.
Here is a simple routine:
- Give every job a short name, such as Smith Kitchen.
- Use that name on every Pro Xtra purchase for the job.
- Once a week, add the week's material costs to the job.
- Compare the total to the materials line on your estimate.
That routine works with a spreadsheet. It is faster with a CRM that keeps expenses on the job. In Vio, you add each receipt to the job as you spend, and Vio shows the job's profit next to the estimate. See job cost tracking and the guide on how to track contractor job costs.
Pro Xtra tips
- Buy everything for one job in one trip when you can, so the receipt matches the job.
- Return extra material to the same account, so the job cost goes back down.
- Photograph big receipts and add them to the job the same day.
- Check that your markup covers the real material price, not last year's. Use the markup calculator.
